April Schultz, 40, and her husband Kevin, 45, bring in $130,000 a year in gross income combined between their four jobs and side gigs. Still, Schultz said it shocks her that such an income "feels like poverty." "We shouldn't have to have four jobs in one family," Schultz said. She said that while there are job opportunities in her area, most don't pay enough for the area's cost of living. They both anticipate downsizing once their kids have moved out and relocating to a more rural and cheaper place.

Money gave me the freedom to leave a toxic job, travel to Europe, and launch my career as a financial advisor. When I set out to save $100,000, I was 22, living in Seattle in 2016 and making $55,000 at my first corporate job. Saving $100,000 was a combination of privilege and hard work. I felt confident I could launch a successful financial education platform and take my financial education business, "Her First $100k," full-time. I wouldn't have hit my $100,000 goal as quickly if I hadn't routinely invested in these accounts.

It includes a $3.1 billion funding increase for the Education Department to help student-loan borrowers. AdvertisementPresident Joe Biden's budget wish list is out — and it includes boosted funding to help student-loan borrowers as they continue to navigate the return to repayment. Biden's budget request released on Monday outlines what his administration is seeking to prioritize in the final year of his first term. Additionally, the budget request proposes getting rid of student-loan origination fees, or fees a lender charges for processing a borrower's loan. However, many of the initiatives in Biden's budget request would require congressional approval, and with Republicans holding a majority in the House, it's unlikely it would pass in its current form.

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — The hallways of Bacone College are cold and dark. In the college’s historic buildings, there are leaks to plug, mold to purge and priceless works of Native American art to save from ruin. Founded in 1880 as a Baptist missionary college focused on assimilation, Bacone College transformed into an Indigenous-led institution that provided an intertribal community, as well as a degree. Across the country, there are only a few dozen tribal colleges, according to the American Indian College Fund, a nonprofit that supports Native American access to higher education. Tribal colleges must be sponsored by a federally recognized tribe and have a majority Native student enrollment.

Even if you can contribute the maximum amount, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should, Mr. McBrien said. You may have other goals to save for besides retirement, said Craig Copeland, director of wealth benefits research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Under the Secure 2.0 Act, a law passed late last year, savers earning $145,000 or more who make 401(k) catch-up contributions would have had to make them as pretax Roth contributions starting in 2024. Can I change the amount of my 401(k) contributions after open enrollment? But while health insurance choices are typically fixed for the full year unless you have a big change in your life, many employers let you tweak your retirement contributions at any time.

Donors often give for specific purposes — facilities, faculty research, technology on campus, athletics, scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. The Wexner Foundation said it’s breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ attacks. Lawrence Summers, the former president of Harvard and US Treasury Secretary, has criticized the “morally unconscionable” student statement and Harvard leaders’ response. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues. Organizers of the Palestine Writes festival denied that it embraced antisemitism, according to UPenn student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian.

The surge comes as educators are scrambling to bolster students’ math skills, which plummeted during the pandemic and haven’t fully recovered. AdvertisementAdvertisementMy family uses separate banks for bills, spending money, credit cards, and investing. Having a separate account just for discretionary funds makes it easier to spend money guilt-free. Our 'spend' account is our 'fun money'This is a money tip I've learned from my parents — keep entertainment funds or "fun money" separate, and always allow room in the budget for this if you can. After bills and contributions to our respective investment accounts and our boys' college funds, we funnel the rest into an entirely different joint account — our 'spend' account. While most people probably use a separate financial institution for their investments and other long-term financial goals, like saving for college, it's the fourth financial institution on our dossier, and probably the most important.

In the first trial, Bankman-Fried faces seven criminal counts related to the collapse of the crypto empire he built, including wire fraud, securities fraud and money laundering. Alameda, FTX and a host of subsidiaries Bankman-Fried founded filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware. FTX's own terms of use specifically forbade him, or Alameda, from using customer money for anything — unless the customer allowed it. And from FTX's inception, there was a lot of customer money. Bankman-Fried and other executives admitted to each other that "FTX customer funds were irrevocably lost because Alameda had appropriated them."

The rest of the money was put into her college fund. We’re never going to give her more than $100 in cash, because she’s a child, so her college fund is likely to grow fairly quickly. Think, for a moment, about what it means for a government to treat its citizens equally. Because particular citizens have particular needs, some will require more resources than others, but nobody is favored or disfavored simply by virtue of who they are. Perhaps surprisingly, I think it can be helpful to apply this idea to the very different context of family life.

NEW YORK (AP) — The HBCU Transformation Project, a coalition of 40 historically Black colleges and universities, on Wednesday announced a $124 million gift from philanthropic funders Blue Meridian Partners to increase enrollment, graduation rates and employment rates for the schools' graduates. “This very significantly scaled grant from them signals to the philanthropic community that this is a really good investment to make,” he said of the Blue Meridian gift. The donation will expand the work of the project, which has already received $75 million from Blue Meridian Partners since 2020. Blue Meridian Partners also provided funds to those organizations to improve their capacity to support the schools. HBCUs have received significantly less support from philanthropic foundations than predominantly white schools.

That’s how long it has been since I took out my first student loan. Though I received grants and held work-study jobs, I still needed around $60,000 in federal student loans to pay for my degrees. The only person possibly more upset about this than me was my accountant, who suggested I refinance into a private student loan. Having federal loans meant that I was eligible for the pause on student loan payments that began in 2020. (In general, if you took out a federal student loan or, like me, consolidated your loans on or after July 1, 2010, you have a federal Direct Loan.)

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday to end race-based affirmative action in college admissions. The Obamas each released a statement reflecting on the role affirmative action has played. Barack Obama wrote that it had allowed students like him and Michelle "to prove we belonged." "Like any policy, affirmative action wasn't perfect," Barack Obama, who attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School, wrote. But still, I sometimes wondered if people thought I got there because of affirmative action.

The Supreme Court struck down Biden's student loan forgiveness plan. Student loan payments will likely resume in October. For the justices behind the decision, the cost of an undergraduate degree was much cheaper when they were in school. According to EDI, there was a 2,807% increase in the average student loan debt at graduation between 1970 and 2021 before adjusting for inflation. Student loan borrowers gathered at the Supreme Court today to tell the court that student loan relief is legal on January 2, 2023.
